Kanye West on The College Dropout being rated EW’s #1 album of the decade:
NO ONE SAW IT COMING. THIS PROJECT WASN’T ABOUT ME, IT WAS ABOUT A TIME IN PEOPLES LIVES WHERE PEOPLE FORCE OPINIONS ON YOU AND YOU HAVE TO MAKE CHOICES FOR YOURSELF.
He also states his biggest influence while recording it:
I WAS MOST INSPIRED BY THE MISEDUCATION OF LAURYN HILL AND I LISTENED TO THAT ALBUM EVERYDAY WHILE WORKING ON MY DEBUT.

Sometimes, in life, certain shit happens at a certain time and you don’t know what to make of it. Other times, shit happens for a reason that you can’t yet understand. Right now is a mix of both of those times.

Sometimes it takes time for things to really set in. To Me College Dropout was speaking ‘For Me’. At the time of the release, I was still in highschool with choices to make, not knowing how big the impact of the album was at the time, the music did more than just play for me, it helped me understand that when you do certain things or choose to do something, its only right if you feel good about it. So me looking more into West’s career at the time of the release, it projected a lot of answers. Like it’s cool to have a Pelle Leather on Layaway. It’s allright to have an accident, stand up from it (record a record with your jaw broken) and move on with high hopes not looking back on what happen looking for excuses. It’s cool to live with a single mother & she doing all she can to provide & make things better for you. It’s ok to have dreams of College, but its even Cooler to drop out to follow your dreams. The Skits at the time were like PSA’s. “Beat That” one of my Fav’s was when homie was talking bout his Father’s diplomas/degrees and what the got him & what they’re doing.. Classic. Shyt is Real though if you think about it.
